Facilities - Adelowo Era

In terms of physical development, Mr. Adelowo did his best. Many more befitting structures were erected in his time. It was during his tenure that the classrooms were renovated, hostels partitioned into rooms, and the dinning hall fitted with fly-proof netting.

The Modern Science Laboratory

Science BuildingFurthermore, three ultra-modern science laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Biology rated the best at that time in Kwara State were built. The design for these laboratories took after those (the building of which was coincidentally supervised in 1971 by Mr Ajayi, a former Principal of Offa Grammar School) of Aiyetoro Comprehensive Model School (a school sponsored by the United States of America). Also, for the first time in the history of schools in Nigeria, Offa Grammar School built and commissioned a zoo within the school compound, and was a proud owner of a flourishing orchard.

More football fields were constructed and more games equipment were bought. A new Home Economics laboratory was built. Two additional staff quarters were erected. Staff quarter #1 was renovated to such a high standard that it served as a guest house for important dignitaries. One of the first guests accommodated there was late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The School chapel and the School Mosque were constructed through the assistance of the respective religious bodies. And finally, for the first time, the school got a van through donation by the Old Students Association, Lagos branch in 1975.

Admissions

MR ADELOWO'S TENURE AS PRINCIPAL

Mr. AdelowoHaving inherited a school with a strong foundation in all spheres of academic, sporting, moral and discipline, the major task of Mr. Adelowo when he took over was to consolidate the gains. The physical facilities were fairly adequate, the curriculum was well developed and the students were disciplined. He embarked on a rapid expansion in students enrollment. For example, as against the double stream per class that he met the school classes were increased initially to three streams and then later to four. This allowed for greater admission opportunity for those seeking admission into the school.

Of significant importance was the year 1968, the year of the Silver Jubilee of the school, when the school was approved not only to run the Higher School Certificate Course (HSC) in both Arts and Science subjects, but also to be an examination centre for the course. He engaged more teachers to enable effective teaching of both the lower and the higher school students.

STUDENT ENROLMENT AND STAFF STRENGTH

Mr Adelowo broadened the admission policy of the school and by 1976 the students population had been trebled to approximately a thousand students from 350 in l966 in Mr Osanyin's time. Although increased, the staff strength was however not commensurate with the students enrollment.

Academics in Adelowo Era

In terms of academic work, the school was a shining example during Mr. Adelowo's tenure. With the benefit of his several years of experience as a teacher and as a WAEC examiner combined with availability of more number of dedicated and experienced teachers together with new instructional facilities, the academic records of the school soared and remained consistent.

The School Certificate results never fell below 70% success rate throughout his time. The HSC results were similarly better than most of the other schools.
